{November 26, 2013}   CONSCIENCE?

WORK SHEET ON CONSCIENCE

A. Read and study each of the situations and then try to decide how you would help resolve the problems presented

SITUATION A

You go to a school where there is a lot of pressure to achieve a high grade. The situation is further complicated by your demanding parents who expect you to do well. You have a pretty good average over your first three years in high school. You are now in your senior year and in a physics class. The teacher is a little unfair. He has planned a difficult test for you and your classmates. You know from the past experience that 50 percent of the students cheat at their exams. You have studied pretty hard, but you know that unless you cheat, many others will get a higher grade than you. What would you do?

Reasons to cheat (3) Reasons to remain honest (3)

higher grades, easy way, do not have to study

guilt, immoral, less things learned

My decision: On a scale from 1 (most inclined to cheat) to 5 (I will remain honest), I would decide: / 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 /

SITUATION B

A good friend of yours offers you some drugs in order for you “to get high”. You show an initial unwillingness to take them. He tries to talk you into it by saying that his experience with drugs is that they are fun. Besides, he says, you cannot really hurt anyone but yourself. He further adds that it is nobody’s business but yours whether you take the drug or not. The law and parents should no prevent you from enjoying yourself. Would you take the drug?

Reasons to take drugs           Reasons not to take drugs

thrill, fun, happiness

expensive, some drugs are harmful, distraction

My decision: On a scale from 1 (most inclined to take it) to 5 (I will not take the drug), I would decide: / 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 /

SITUATION C

Your post high school career has taken you into the Air Force. Unfortunately, your country is at war with a separatist group of rebels in a far off town that wants to secede on the basis of their beliefs. You respect the law and believe very much in the values in your constitution. On a particular day, you are ordered to bomb and totally destroy the village where the rebels are hiding. The rebels are a majority there although among them too are many old people and children. The residents do not support the rebels but are silent on account of their fear of the rebels getting back at them. Should you bomb?

Reasons to bomb Reasons not to bomb

eradicate opposition, safety of majority, orders

murder of innocent, guilt, moral conflict

My decision: On a scale from 1 (most inclined to bomb) to 5 (I will not bomb), I would                       decide: / 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 /

  1. ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS

  1. SITUATION A: Is cheating ever right? Does the argument “because everyone else is doing it” make it right? Can you think of some consequences for society if morality were based on that argument?

There may be rare instances where cheating is the best course of action for the benefit of the majority. However, the argument “because everyone else is doing it” is invalid. If that was how society thinks, the community would commit the same immoral acts in large groups.

  1. SITUATION B: Would your decision concerning drugs have made a difference if the drug were marijuana? Shabu? Do parents and society have a right to limit your “fun”?

My decision would have been affected by the type of drug as marijuana has been scientifically proven to be harmless. However, some drugs such as Shabu have been known to cause bodily harm. I believe parents and society have a right to limit our fun if it prevents us from harming ourselves.

  1. SITUATION C: Are we always obliged to follow authority? Where do we draw a line between disobedience to law and conscience?

We should not always be obliged to follow authority. We must depend on our conscience to decide which way we should go to especially regarding moral conflicts.

  1. CONSCIENCE SURVEY
  1. Something is right for me if I think it is right

  1. Something is right if my intention and feelings are right.

{July 3, 2013}   Saving Private Ryan Review

When it was announced that we will be watching Saving Private Ryan for our TOK class, I immediately read more about the film. Although I have never watched this movie yet, I do recognize the title and upon further research, I found out that the film by Steven Spielberg has won a very great number of awards. It has won titles such as “Best Cinematography” and “Best Motion Picture”. With this in mind, I was excited to watch how the movie unfolds and how it portrays the intensity of war.

What struck me the most was the opening scene. Aside fro the usual setting of a violent gunfight between two sides, the movie took the extra step and it showed the reality of war. For example, while on a boat waiting for landing, the tension was very evident with the soldiers. There was even one that had to puke whilst inside the boat. Also, just as the gates of the boat was opened, the men who were in the frontline were immediately gunned to death. These were men who had to endure a very tough and rigorous military training, had to leave their friends and family, and sacrificed a whole lot more just to fight for their country. This opening scene was very powerful for me. One reason is because, when compared to other war documentaries I have watched in the past, I believe that the film is trying to give significance to each and every single soldier in the battlefield. In the text books we have read in class, popular names such as McArthur often appear. However, the lower ranking soldiers are often forgotten. I do like the fact that the whole movie revolved around saving a single soldier, and not a high ranking one at that. The film gives the viewers real emotions that occur during war. The sense of camaraderie, fear, loyalty, honor, etc. were all emphasized through the characters themselves. Again, these abstract feelings can hardly be shown through books and it was through a film that these were made clear to me.

{December 5, 2012}   TOK – NBA Power Bracelets

1. The NBA Power Bracelets supposedly made athletes stronger, give more balance, and perform better overall in their individual sports. Mark Cuban, the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, refused to endorse this product as he believes this is simply a scam.

2. The Power Bracelets was advertised to use holographic technology” to “resonate with and respond to the natural energy field of the body”, and increase sporting ability.

3. The scientists often link the power bracelets with the effect of placebo. Its supposed effects are thought to be simply the effect of thinking that the bracelets do work.

4. I believe that scientists should continue research about this. By continuing study in sports equipment, we may be able to identify new chemicals or particles that may help athletes perform better. However, I believe that we should enforce the banning of these products as they may give an unfair advantage over a certain team or athlete. I believe that scientists should continue research of these products but unless everyone uses it, we should ban these sports equipment

{August 15, 2012}   DHMO

I disagree with this article. This article states several negative statements about water that may be true, but does not show what it actually is. For example, the article states that prolonged exposure to solid DHMO causes severe tissue damage. The common first thought is that “solid DHMO” should be avoided at all costs to prevent severe tissue damage. However, solid DHMO is simply just ice. Another example is that the article states that DHMO is used by both the KKK and the NAACP during rallies and marches. You could also say that food is also used by them but you wouldn’t really avoid food because of this. This article is a fallacy because first, it “hides” the moe common name for water which is H2O as DHMO so that people may not recognize it. Also, the article singles out examples that bring out a negative impression such as excessive ingestion produces a number of unpleasant though not typically life-threatening side-effects. In reality, this means that drinking too much water makes you urinate more. However, the author worded the statement to have a negative thought on people’s minds. This article targets the people who are not familiar with “dihydrogen monoxide” and what it really is.
